Jan 26 (Reuters) - Lionsgate Studios has ‍appointed former U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin as a director ‍on the company's board effective immediately, it said on Monday.

Mnuchin's "steady judgment, global perspective and deep industry insights will be enormously valuable" as Lionsgate continues to grow, said Mark Rachesky, chair of the board, in a statement.

"Lionsgate's board and management team are building something dynamic and forward‑looking, and I am ‌eager to support that momentum," Mnuchin said.

Mnuchin, who was U.S. Treasury secretary in President Donald Trump's first administration, has co-financed science-fiction fantasy film "Avatar" and has more than ‌35 executive producer credits.

Prior to joining the Trump administration, Mnuchin spent 17 years ‌at Goldman Sachs before leaving in 2002, when ‌he launched Dune Capital Management, a hedge fund that focused on entertainment industry investments.

Mnuchin founded ‍Liberty Strategic Capital, a private equity firm, after leaving office with investments from Softbank Group and Abu Dhabi's Mubadala sovereign wealth fund.
