Van Eck Sees Technology Driving Big Industry Changes
How FinTech and Millennials are changing the financial services landscape
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- With the financial services industry abuzz with talk of robo advisers and the changing way Millennials source financial information, Jan van Eck, CEO of Van Eck Global and co-founder of Vetr, a social investing site, sees a potentially big impact on the structure of the financial services business model.
“We’re seeing a sea change not only in the way investment management services are being delivered to clients, but also in the way investors are sourcing and vetting investment ideas,” said Mr. van Eck.
Along those lines, Vetr is being noticed by industry watchers for its impressive growth. On April 8, 2015, Vetr.com won the award for ‘Best Use of the Crowd’ at the Benzinga FinTech Awards ceremony in New York City. The start-up aggregates crowd-sourced opinions and price predictions for stocks and mutual funds, and uses that information to create easy-to-understand star ratings for thousands of potential investments. The ‘Best Use of the Crowd’ category showcased companies that encourage the public to share investment ideas. Finalists included Openfolio, Darwinex, InvestFeed, NVestly, Tip’d Off, Stockfuse, Thinknum, and Estimize. Vetr was among 57 firms that attended the event and was nominated for two out of the 14 categories available (‘Best Use of the Crowd’ and “Creating Proprietary Data – Best in Class”).
“’Best Use of the Crowd’ fits Vetr perfectly, and the award is a testament to the site’s growth over the past few months,” said Mr. van Eck.
Vetr’s CEO Patrick Williams commented, “Winning this award in front of heavy hitters like Charles Schwab, TD Ameritrade, and Microsoft really puts Vetr in a great position to grow. We were up against stiff competition.”
Over 350 people attended the Benzinga FinTech Awards at Tribeca 360. A wide range of Fintech companies were showcased from robo advisors to crowd-sourced data. Other winners at the event included Betterment, Estimize, and Motif Investing.
This was the inaugural year for the Benzinga Fintech Awards, sponsored by Benzinga, which plans to continue this type of recognition in the future.
