Company’s culture of safety excellence receives recognition from EHS Today Magazine

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In recognition of ComEd’s steadfast commitment to safety and outstanding and continually improving safety results, EHS Today magazine named ComEd one of America’s safest companies for 2015.

Companies honored with the award had to demonstrate transformational safety leadership in the form of support from management and employee involvement; innovative solutions to safety challenges; injury and illness rates significantly lower than the average for their industries; comprehensive training programs; evidence that prevention of incidents is the cornerstone of the safety process; excellent communication internally and externally about the value of safety; and a way to substantiate the benefits of the safety process.

“Safety is a core value at ComEd,” said Anne Pramaggiore, president and CEO of ComEd. “We have partnered with our front-line employees to put programs and processes in place to help ensure that our employees have better and safer working environments, while also empowering them to make on-the-job decisions that promote safety. These efforts have resulted in the best safety performance in ComEd’s history, which translates to fewer injuries. We are honored to be recognized by EHS Today Magazine.”

Over the last three years, ComEd’s safety performance has seen continued improvement as the company has tirelessly worked to transform its safety culture. New processes have been developed to assist employees in recognizing hazards and minimizing risk. Public safety programs help customers stay safe during storms and while smart grid and other system improvements are put into place. In addition, ComEd has a variety of safety communications that are targeted at contractors, do-it-yourselfers and schools reminding them how to be safe around electricity. This summer, the company launched a new advertising campaign called “One Line You Should Never Cross” to help bring more awareness to overhead wire safety.

In addition to being recognized as one of America’s safest companies, ComEd has also been ranked in the top decile of electric utilities by Edison Electric Institute for safety performance.

“We work in an environment where constant attention to detail is needed to make sure all of our employees go home safely,” said Terence R. Donnelly, executive vice-president and chief operating officer for ComEd. “At ComEd we believe that no job is more important than the safety of our employees and customers. It’s a pillar of culture in our company.”
