Cue Biopharma names Usman Azam as new CEO effective September 29

September 29, 2025 9:00 AM EDT

Cue Biopharma Inc. (NASDAQ: CUE) announced that Usman Azam, M.D., has been appointed president and chief executive officer effective September 29, 2025. Daniel Passeri will transition from his current CEO role to strategic advisor on the same date.

The clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company said the leadership change supports its focus on autoimmune disease treatments, particularly advancing its drug candidate CUE-401 into clinical trials. CUE-401 is described as a tolerogenic biologic designed to restore immune system balance.

Azam brings over 25 years of drug development experience to the role. He previously served as CEO of Inspirna Inc., a clinical-stage cancer drug company, and CEO of Empyrean Neuroscience. At Tmunity Therapeutics, he worked on CAR-T cell therapies for solid tumors. He also held leadership positions at Novartis, where he helped deliver the first FDA-approved CAR-T cell therapy for blood cancers, and at pharmaceutical companies including Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, and GlaxoSmithKline.

Pasha Sarraf, M.D., Ph.D., chairman of Cue Biopharma's board, stated that the company believes CUE-401's mechanism could become significant in autoimmune disease treatment. The company's Immuno-STAT platform is designed to engage disease-specific T cells within patients' bodies.

Cue Biopharma develops therapeutic biologics for autoimmune diseases and cancer. The Boston-based company's lead autoimmune asset, CUE-401, combines a TGF-beta component with an interleukin-2 mutein in a single injectable treatment.

The information is based on a company press release statement.
