Boston Beer names Phil Hodges as chief operating officer

The Boston Beer Company (NYSE: SAM) announced that Phil Hodges has been named chief operating officer, effective immediately, according to a company press release.

Hodges, who has served as chief supply chain officer since May 2023, will expand his responsibilities to oversee day-to-day operations across all functions. He will focus on execution improvements and implementing the company's brand building and margin enhancement initiatives while reporting to founder and CEO Jim Koch.

Before joining Boston Beer, Hodges provided supply chain consulting services starting in 2022. He brings more than 30 years of consumer packaged goods experience, including roles as chief supply chain officer at Carlsberg, chief financial officer of Kraft Foods International, and general manager of Mondelez in Southeast Asia.

Koch will continue as CEO, a position he assumed in August, and will focus on innovation, wholesaler relations, brand investment strategy, and talent development. "Phil brings a wealth of experience beyond his supply chain expertise, and his stepping into the COO role will enable me to focus on the big picture while he ensures we're intensely focused on operational execution," Koch said.

Phil Savastano has been promoted to chief supply chain officer, taking over Hodges' previous responsibilities including brewery management, procurement, customer service, engineering, safety, quality, and planning. Savastano joined Boston Beer in March 2024 to lead operations at the Samuel Adams Pennsylvania Brewery and previously worked at Tesla and Molson Coors.

Since Hodges became chief supply chain officer, the company has achieved improved service levels and efficiency gains in its breweries and procurement, resulting in gross margin expansion, according to the announcement.
