InterDigital wins injunction against Disney in Brazil patent case

September 11, 2025 5:56 AM EDT

InterDigital Inc. (NASDAQ: IDCC) received a preliminary injunction against Disney from a Brazilian court for patent infringement related to video coding technology.

The 7th Corporate Court of the Judicial District of the Capital of Rio de Janeiro ruled that Disney infringed two InterDigital patents covering AVC and HEVC video coding technology. The decision followed an independent expert report commissioned by the court that supported InterDigital's infringement claims.

The expert report concluded that Disney infringed both patents and that InterDigital does not have a RAND (reasonable and non-discriminatory) obligation for the asserted encoder claims.

"This decision is an important step in ensuring that we receive fair value from Disney's ongoing use of our innovation," said Josh Schmidt, Chief Legal Officer at InterDigital, according to the company's statement.

InterDigital develops wireless, video and artificial intelligence technologies and licenses its patents to companies providing communications and entertainment products and services. The company was founded in 1972 and trades on the Nasdaq exchange.

The ruling addresses InterDigital's patents related to video compression technology used in streaming services. Disney operates streaming platforms including Disney+ and Hulu.
