Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE: XOM) disclosed that an International Chamber of Commerce arbitration panel ruled against the company in a contractual dispute with Hess Corporation regarding interests in the Stabroek Block offshore Guyana.
The company stated it disagrees with the ICC panel's interpretation but respects the arbitration process. ExxonMobil had claimed preemption rights in the dispute, arguing it had a duty to ensure contract terms were followed and to protect value created through its development work in Guyana.
The arbitration involved ExxonMobil and CNOOC challenging aspects of Hess Corporation's contractual arrangements in the Stabroek Block. ExxonMobil said it believed it had clear preemption rights to protect the value it created through innovation and development work when the venture's success was uncertain.
Following the ruling, ExxonMobil welcomed Chevron to the venture and indicated it looks forward to continued operations in Guyana. The company's statement was based on information provided in a press release.
The Stabroek Block has been a significant offshore oil development project for the companies involved. The arbitration ruling resolves the contractual dispute that had been ongoing between the parties regarding their respective interests and rights in the block.
