Denison Mines Corp. (NYSE American: DNN) disclosed that the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation filed an application for judicial review in Saskatchewan's Court of King's Bench against the Government of Saskatchewan and the company.
The application seeks to set aside the provincial ministerial approval under The Environmental Assessment Act that allows Denison to construct a uranium mine and processing plant at the Wheeler River Project. The Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation claims the Government of Saskatchewan breached its duty to consult with the nation and requires further consultation regarding the project.
Denison stated it has engaged with the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation since March 2023 when it became aware of the nation's interest in the project. The nation was provided an opportunity to review the draft Environmental Impact Statement starting in November 2022. The company recently executed an environmental monitoring and capacity agreement with the nation to support independent environmental monitoring activities.
The company said it was not made aware of the nation's intention to seek judicial review. Denison denied the claims and stated it intends to defend against the orders requested in the application.
Wheeler River is located in northern Saskatchewan's Athabasca Basin region and represents a joint venture between Denison, which holds a 90% operating interest, and JCU Canada Exploration Company Limited with 10%. The project hosts the Phoenix and Gryphon uranium deposits discovered by Denison in 2008 and 2014.
The information comes from a company press release statement.
