Wolfe downgrades Inspire Medical on Medicare payment reversal
Investing.com -- Wolfe Research downgraded Inspire Medical Systems to Peer Perform, saying a reversal in U.S. reimbursement dynamics has removed a key pricing tailwind and made the company’s outlook more uncertain.
The brokerage said its earlier bullish stance was tied to what appeared to be strong facility incentives and meaningful pricing opportunity tied to reimbursement changes.
That setup supported expectations for margin expansion, improving profitability and a potential replacement cycle that could sustain growth.
Wolfe said that opportunity has largely disappeared after what it described as a misstep by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, which moved to reverse earlier payment changes.
The shift not only removes a potential boost but may now create a headwind, the note said.
The firm said the lowered company guidance is now harder to assess with confidence, particularly as reduced physician incentives could weigh on procedure volumes.
It also pointed to a more complex competitive and treatment landscape ahead, including pressure from alternatives and rival device makers such as Nyxoah SA and LivaNova PLC, along with emerging therapies from Apnimed.
Wolfe said the stock appears inexpensive on valuation, but the reimbursement reversal undermines conviction in near-term earnings potential.
The earlier investment case had also relied on signs that the company was nearing the end of a period of estimate cuts and had begun to show profitability.
With the pricing opportunity now removed and policy uncertainty rising, the firm said the outlook has become more difficult to model, leading it to step back from a positive rating.
