Investing.com -- The US Supreme Court has scheduled February 20 as its next opinion day, with additional sessions on February 24 and 25, as importers and markets await a ruling that could invalidate most of President Donald Trump's signature tariffs.
The tariff case is among 12 cases argued in October or November that remain undecided as the court returns from a four-week recess.
According to federal government data, the disputed tariffs are costing importers more than $16 billion monthly. The court is reviewing Trump's April 2 "Liberation Day" tariffs, which imposed levies of 10-50% on most imports, as well as duties placed on Canada, Mexico and China that were implemented to address fentanyl trafficking.
A ruling against the administration would represent Trump's most significant legal setback since returning to the White House. The White House has indicated it would quickly replace any invalidated tariffs using alternative legal mechanisms, though Trump has acknowledged these alternatives would be more cumbersome to implement.
The Supreme Court heard arguments on November 5 on an expedited schedule, leading some court observers to anticipate a potentially faster-than-usual decision. The expedited hearing had suggested a ruling might come within weeks rather than the typical months-long timeframe for Supreme Court decisions.
