Twitter (TWTR) Turns to Russia for Revenue Diversification

December 19, 2014 6:48 AM EST

In an effort to garner more revenue outside the U.S., Twitter (NYSE: TWTR) has begun to sell advertising in Russia via reseller Httpool.

Httpool is Twitter's ad partner in Eastern Europe.

Twitter's first clients are said to include VimpelCom (NYSE: VIP) and OAO Sberbank (OTCBB: SBRCY), according to Bloomberg.

Speaking in Moscow on Thursday, Twitter Vice President Colin Crowell said, Twitter’s global prospects as a company are contingent on succeeding in markets around the world, ... We’ve been -- particularly over the last 18 months -- growing internationally to catch up to where the service and the brand outleaped the size of the company a few years back.

comScore recently reported that Twitter had 10.1 million users in Russia as of July 2014, compared with 10.5 million at social media giant Facebook (Nasdaq: FB). Mail.ru Group's VKontakte and Odnoklassniki had 59 and 53 million users, respectively.
