Twitter (NYSE: TWTR) is expanding into China with the opening of a new office in the country today.
According to the South China Morning Post, Twitter is opening an office in Hong Kong. The office will serve as the main hub for Twitter's Greater China region.
Twitter's goal is to initially help Chinese businesses connect with overseas users.
News comes as Twitter, along social media peer Facebook (Nasdaq: FB), has been blocked in China since 2009.
Twitter VP of Asia Pacific, America, and Emerging Markets, Shailesh Rao, commented, We're capitalizing on this growing trend where the most ambitious, entrepreneurial and successful Chinese companies want to go global, and we believe that Twitter is an essential way for them to connect and engage with the world.
Twitter is lower in early trading Tuesday. Also on watch will be Weibo Corp. (Nasdaq: WB), and Sina Corp. (Nasdaq: SINA), which runs a microblogging service in China.
