Twitter (TWTR) Expected to Overtake Yahoo! (YHOO) in Digital Display Ads

Twitter (NYSE: TWTR) is slated to surpass Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO) in digital display advertising this year.

eMarketer said Wednesday that online display advertising will reach $27.05 billion this year and move to $37.36 billion by 2017. The firm also sees Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) and Twitter combining for 33.7 percent of the overall market, up from 30.2 percent in 2015.

Twitter is expected to account for 5.0 percent of online digital ads by the end of 2015, versus 4.6 percent for Yahoo! That amounts to $1.34 and $1.24 billion for the two companies, respectively.

Google (Nasdaq: GOOG)(Nasdaq: GOOGL) will retain its second-place position behind Facebook for the next few years.

Both Twitter and Yahoo! are lower in early trading Thursday.
