Tesla (TSLA) in Focus Ahead of Today's Model X Event

September 29, 2015 9:54 AM EDT

Tesla Motors (Nasdaq: TSLA) shares have moved from positive to negative early Tuesday ahead of the company's Model X event, which will kickoff around 7:30pm PT (10:30pm ET).

A livestream of the event will begin at 8:00pm PT here, according to CEO Elon Musk.

Details of the event are sparse at best. It isn't clear how many of the Model X SUVs will be delivered and whether or not the vehicles will be the Signature of Founder edition.

While the interior of the Model X is expected to be more spacious than an SUV of similar size due to electric engine placement, one concern that appears to be lingering is second-row seating. Tentative photos of the Model X interior show a second row seating arrangement that doesn't appear to fold flat. While the final product is still under wraps, some owners might express disappointment in the configuration. But, if you've been following the company, it might not be out of the question for Tesla to develop a new arrangement down the line and swap that in for owners at no charge. Of course, this is just our speculation.

In terms of pricing, the Model X is expected to run about $5,000 above a similarly equipped Model S sedan. Top-end Signature editions should reach $132,000.

The Model X is just one element of a busy year coming up for Tesla, with the company looking to complete its Gigafactory battery plant, preview the Model 3, and advance its home and commercial power storage operations all before 2017.
