November 10, 2010 10:40 AM EST
Research in Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ: RIMM) to start selling its tablet computer, the BlackBerry Playbook beginning in the first quarter of 2011, pricing it under $500, according to media reports on Wednesday.

RIM Co-CEO Jim Balsillie said, “The product will be very competitively priced."

This statement hints that it will cost less than the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPad, which starts at $499. The iPad has a stranglehold on the tablet market as countless competitive product start to flood the sector.

Balsillie also noted that RIM may sell the Playbook through Target Corp. (NYSE: TGT) and Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) in addition to wireless carriers.
