Consumer Reports Survey Puts AT&T (T) Dead-Last (VZ, S)

December 6, 2010 6:01 PM EST
According to a report in Consumer Reports, AT&T (NYSE: T) has ranked at the bottom of the list of mobile carrier customer satisfaction nationally.

The carrier came in last in every city in which the survey was conducted, receiving a 'worse' rating in eight of nine categories.

For the most part, Verizon Wireless, of Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ) and Vodafone (NYSE: VOD), came in first in most categories, which varied from value, to phone support, and the company website. Sprint (NYSE: S) and T-Mobile filled in the middle two spots.

AT&T responded with the following comment:

"We take this seriously and we continually look for new ways to improve the customer experience. The fact is wireless customers have choices and a record number of them chose AT&T in the third quarter, significantly more than our competitors. Hard data from independent drive tests confirms AT&T has the nation’s fastest mobile broadband network with our nearest competitor 20% slower on average nationwide and our largest competitor 60% slower on average nationwide. And, our dropped call rate is within 1/10 of a percent – the equivalent of just one call in a thousand – of the industry leader."

Notably, this author has asked countless AT&T Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone users what their service experience has been like. Most (99% or more) respond that they have had no problems.

Shares of AT&T closed 0.67% lower today. Verizon was about flat, and Sprint was up on a David Einhorn call.
