Every now and then a large tech/communications company will slip up and unveil or talk about something that isn't supposed to be public yet. For China Telecom (NYSE: CHA), that time is now.
According to the WSJ, China Telecom's website has already leaked an advertisement for Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. Yes, those will be the names of the devices.
Expected to be announced at a September 10th event in the U.S. and September 11th event in Beijing, many users of Sina Corp.'s (Nasdaq: SINA) Twitter-like microblog Weibo noticed the post, quickly capturing the image and posting it to the social media site.
Though the overall look and internals of the next version of the iPhone might not be a complete departure from the iPhone 5, one point is important for Apple investors: the company is taking its position in China much more seriously. Previously, users in China would have to wait months following a launch of the next mobile device in the U.S. before being able to get their hands on one. Now, speculation surrounds whether that wait might be cut down to weeks following U.S. launch.
Given that China is the world's number one mobile phone market, a quick introduction of the next iPhone line will be key for Apple to solidify a stronger position in the country. Recent reports have Apple's total market share falling to number five as more local names debut cheaper smartphones that have attracted plenty of customers. Apple is expected to release its own low-cost smartphone in the iPhone 5C, but whether or not that will be enough to sway buyers is yet to be seen.
Shares of Apple are up in early trading Friday.
