Apple's (AAPL) iPhone 3GS Sees Stronger Demand than iPhone 4

December 9, 2011 7:46 AM EST
Despite two more-updated choices for Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone, industry sources say demand is still rather strong for the 3GS model heading through the fourth quarter, though production is ebbing.

According to Digitimes, orders for Apple's iPhone 3GS are expected to be about 2 million units in the fourth quarter, dropping to an expected range of 1.4 million to 1.6 million units in the first quarter of 2012. Digitimes cites OEM sources on the news.

With emerging markets continuing to adapt to smartphones, the numbers are good for Apple.

Additionally, AT&T (NYSE: T) has been promoting the iPhone 3GS with zero subscription rates.

CDMA versions of the iPhone 4 are expected to be better than 800,000 to 1 million units in the fourth quarter, dropping to a range of 500,000 to 600,000 in the following quarter.

Why production is lower for the iPhone 4 is anyone's guess. It might be because of inventory control efforts, or availability of devices in certain markets.
