STAAR Surgical Company (NASDAQ: STAA) reported preliminary third quarter net sales of $94.7 million, representing a 6.9% increase from $88.6 million in the prior year period, according to a company statement.
The results included $25.9 million from a previously disclosed December 2024 shipment to a Chinese distributor that was subject to extended payment terms. The company had shipped $27.5 million of implantable collamer lenses to the distributor in December 2024, recognizing $1.6 million in the second quarter 2025 and the remaining $25.9 million in the third quarter upon payment receipt.
Net sales growth was driven by the December China shipment combined with 7.7% growth in sales outside China. This was partially offset by lower new orders from Chinese distributors during the third quarter, attributed in part to inventory management practices.
For the nine months ended September 26, 2025, sales were lower than the prior year period as Chinese distributors reduced inventory by approximately $80 million to $85 million rather than purchasing new products. As of September 26, 2025, the company estimates its Chinese distributors maintained inventory at approximately six months, aligned with contractual levels.
The company released these preliminary results ahead of its October 23, 2025 stockholder meeting to vote on a proposed merger with Alcon. The financial information is unaudited and subject to adjustment pending completion of the quarterly review and finalization of financial statements for the Form 10-Q filing.
STAAR Surgical specializes in implantable phakic intraocular lenses for vision correction and is headquartered in Lake Forest, California.
