Costco reports 8.5% December sales increase to $29.86 billion

Costco Wholesale Corporation (NASDAQ: COST) reported net sales of $29.86 billion for December, representing an 8.5% increase from $27.52 billion in the same period last year, according to a company statement.
The retailer's net sales for the first 18 weeks of its fiscal year reached $101.83 billion, up 8.3% from $94.04 billion in the prior year period.
Comparable sales growth varied by region during the five-week December period. U.S. locations posted 6.0% growth, while Canada showed 8.4% growth and other international markets achieved 10.6% growth. Total company comparable sales increased 7.0%.
For the 18-week period, comparable sales grew 5.9% in the U.S., 7.0% in Canada, and 9.5% in other international markets, with total company comparable sales rising 6.6%.
Digitally-enabled sales showed growth of 18.9% for the five-week period and 19.6% for the 18-week period.
When excluding impacts from gasoline price changes and foreign exchange fluctuations, comparable sales for the five-week period were 6.3% for the U.S., 6.0% for Canada, and 5.6% for other international markets. The total company comparable sales growth was 6.2% under this measure.
Costco operates 923 warehouses globally, including 633 in the United States and Puerto Rico, 114 in Canada, and locations across Mexico, Japan, the United Kingdom, Korea, Australia, Taiwan, China, Spain, France, Sweden, Iceland, and New Zealand. The company also operates e-commerce sites in multiple countries.
