November 14, 2025 9:00 AM EST

Silicon Motion Technology Corporation (NASDAQ: SIMO) announced the SM8388, an 8-channel PCIe Gen5 enterprise SSD controller designed for nearline solid-state drives. The controller delivers 14.4GB/s sequential read performance while consuming under 5W of power.

The SM8388 features an 8-channel architecture supporting up to 3,200MT/s per channel and can handle SSD capacities up to 128TB. The controller supports up to 3.5 million IOPS random read performance and complies with NVMe 2.6 standards. It supports multiple data center form factors including EDSFF and U.2/U.3 configurations.

The controller incorporates security features including attestation, secure boot, key wrapping, AES-256 encryption, and TCG Opal compliance. It includes a hardware-based channel speed accelerator using Separate Command Address technology to optimize PCIe Gen5 performance.

"The SM8388 extends our proven MonTitan SSD development platform that was first introduced with our successful high-performance, 16-channel PCIe Gen5 SM8366 controller," said Alex Chou, Senior Vice President of Enterprise Storage & Display Interface Solution Business at Silicon Motion.

The controller is built on Silicon Motion's MonTitan enterprise SSD development platform, which provides a foundation for PCIe Gen5 SSD solutions. The platform combines the company's controller architecture, firmware stack, and reference design.

AIC Inc. will collaborate with Silicon Motion on AI server platforms incorporating SSDs powered by the MonTitan platform. Silicon Motion plans to showcase the controller solutions with AIC at Super Computing 2025.

The company's enterprise SSD controller portfolio includes the SM8366, SM8308, SM8388 for data storage applications, and the SM8008 and SM8004 for boot drives, according to the press release.
