Think you're going to enjoy talking and surfing the web on Samsung's new Galaxy S II smartphone? If you're a Verizon wireless customer... think again.
Reports Thursday afternoon rumor Verizon (NYSE: VZ) will not carry the Galaxy S II, a device some believed would challenge Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone for overall market share dominance.
Recent numbers from IDC show Samsung moving into second place among handset makers, beating out rivals Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM). One IDC analyst believes this is a very important device for Samsung. The analyst also said timing is important.
With a September launch, Samsung will have about a month advantage over Apple, which is slated to release it's next-generation iPhone in the middle of October. Further, Sprint will also be carrying the new iPhone, as well as Apple's current iPhone 4 device.
Galaxy S II will be offered by AT&T (NYSE: T), Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S), and T-Mobile starting in September. The device will run Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android OS, and is already available in parts of Europe, where it shipped 54 million units.
