Illumina Inc. (NASDAQ: ILMN) announced the launch of StrataMap Spatial Solution, a sequencing-based research platform for spatial transcriptomics studies. The solution, previously called the Illumina Spatial Solution, provides whole-transcriptome profiling capabilities for tissue analysis.
The platform features a 7.5 square centimeter capture area and offers single-cell resolution analysis. According to the company, the sequencing-based approach detects twice as many genes per sample compared to panel-based technologies. The system can process more than 2,000 samples annually and complete sequencing in 22 hours.
StrataMap Spatial runs on Illumina's NovaSeq and NextSeq platforms and includes bioinformatics tools through DRAGEN and Illumina Connected Multiomics for data processing and analysis. The solution supports fresh frozen tissue sections and accommodates various eukaryotic tissue samples. Illumina stated it is developing a formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue solution targeted for customer availability in 2027.
"Spatial biology offers a new perspective on how our genetic code manifests in our bodies," said Steve Barnard, chief technology officer of Illumina. "Our customers are already using StrataMap Spatial's unparalleled discovery power to map intricate tissues and study tumor development."
Researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center used the platform to analyze human lymphatic collector vessels, while teams at Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute and University of Cambridge applied it to central nervous system tumors including glioma and glioblastoma tissues.
The StrataMap Spatial Solution is available for order this month, according to the company's announcement.
