Galapagos finalizes wind-down of cell therapy operations
Galapagos NV (Euronext & NASDAQ: GLPG) completed works council consultations and will proceed with shutting down its cell therapy activities, the company announced.
The biotechnology company first disclosed its intention to wind down cell therapy operations on October 21, 2025, following a strategic review and sale process that explored potential divestment options. The decision required completion of consultations with works councils in Belgium and the Netherlands.
"We have now concluded the works council consultation process regarding our intention to wind down the Company's cell therapy activities," said Henry Gosebruch, CEO of Galapagos.
The wind-down will affect approximately 365 employees across Europe, the United States and China. Galapagos will close facilities in Leiden, Netherlands; Basel, Switzerland; Princeton and Pittsburgh in the U.S.; and Shanghai, China.
The company will maintain operations at its headquarters in Mechelen, Belgium, and hubs in Chicago and San Francisco. Galapagos stated it will continue non-cell therapy activities, including the TYK2 program GLPG3667, and plans to evaluate strategic alternatives for the program including resuming its partnering process for development in dermatomyositis and other autoimmune conditions.
As of December 31, 2025, Galapagos reported approximately €3.0 billion in cash, cash equivalents and financial investments. The company plans to provide updated timeline estimates and potential wind-down costs during its full year 2025 earnings release on February 23, 2026, and conference call on February 24, 2026.
