Coinbase Global Inc. (NASDAQ: COIN) announced it has entered an agreement to acquire The Clearing Company, a prediction markets startup that specializes in regulated, blockchain-based markets.

The acquisition follows Coinbase's recent launch of prediction markets trading on its platform, which allows users to trade on outcomes of real-world events including elections, economic indicators, sports, and cultural events within the same interface used for cryptocurrency, derivatives, and equities trading.

The Clearing Company is led by founder Toni Gemayel, described by Coinbase as a product and growth leader with experience in the prediction markets sector. The acquired team will focus on scaling prediction markets trading capabilities on Coinbase's platform.

Coinbase stated the acquisition supports its strategy to build what it calls the "Everything Exchange," a platform designed to offer trading across multiple asset classes. The company said prediction markets represent a natural extension of this vision, enabling customers to participate in event-based trading alongside their existing portfolios.

The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed in the announcement. Coinbase indicated the deal aims to accelerate its prediction markets roadmap by adding specialized expertise in the category.

Prediction markets allow participants to trade contracts based on the outcomes of future events, with prices reflecting the collective assessment of event probabilities. Coinbase operates these markets through what it describes as a regulated venue.
