Citigroup (NYSE: C) has confirmed a breach of its Citi Account Online business.
The institution said the breach allowed unauthorized access to 1 percent of its card customers. Items viewed by the hackers included customers' account numbers and contact information -- the only information held by Citi Account Online. Items such as Social Security Information, birth dates, and card security codes were not viewed.
Financial Times reports the hacks happened in early May. FT also noted some have said debit accounts were compromised along with credit accounts.
Security breaches have become almost commonplace recently, with reports of intrusions at tech giant Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) and national defense contractor Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) happening all within the last few weeks.
Citi shares are up slightly in pre-market trade Thursday.
