January 26, 2026 7:30 AM EST

BWX Technologies Inc. (NYSE: BWXT) opened its Centrifuge Manufacturing Development Facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, seven months after breaking ground in June. The facility supports a $1.5 billion contract awarded by the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration in September for domestic uranium enrichment capabilities.

The facility serves as BWXT's primary hub for designing, engineering, fabricating and testing advanced gas centrifuge machines. It features precision manufacturing space, quality assurance capabilities and specialized infrastructure to support future centrifuge production.

"With the CMDF now operational, we are positioned to move centrifuge technology from development into production readiness while strengthening America's sovereign nuclear supply chain," said Rex D. Geveden, BWXT president and CEO.

NNSA Administrator Brandon Williams said the facility represents efforts to restore domestic uranium enrichment capability for defense needs. The program aims to ensure the United States can meet defense fuel requirements and maintain nuclear deterrent capabilities.

Approximately 100 professionals currently work in support of the facility and project activities, with plans to expand the workforce as manufacturing activities scale. BWXT employs more than 1,100 people in Tennessee through its operations in Oak Ridge and its subsidiary, Nuclear Fuel Services.

The facility will accelerate the transition of centrifuge technology from development to production readiness and aligns with priorities for energy security, defense readiness and advanced manufacturing, according to the company's press release.

BWXT is a Fortune 1000 manufacturing and engineering company with approximately 10,000 employees that provides nuclear solutions for security, clean energy, nuclear medicine, space exploration and environmental restoration.
