BP names Meg O'Neill as next CEO

BP plc (LSE and NYSE: BP) announced that Meg O'Neill will become chief executive officer effective April 1, 2026. O'Neill currently serves as CEO of Woodside Energy.

Murray Auchincloss will step down as CEO and board director on December 18. Carol Howle, executive vice president of supply, trading and shipping at BP, will serve as interim CEO until O'Neill assumes the role. Auchincloss will remain in an advisory capacity through December 2026.

O'Neill has led Woodside Energy since 2021, during which time the company became the largest energy company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange. She oversaw Woodside's acquisition of BHP Petroleum International. Before joining Woodside in 2018, O'Neill spent 23 years at ExxonMobil in various technical, operational and leadership roles.

"Her proven track record of driving transformation, growth, and disciplined capital allocation makes her the right leader for bp," said Albert Manifold, BP's chair, in a statement.

O'Neill said she was "honoured to serve as the company's next CEO" and looks forward to working with BP's leadership team to "accelerate performance, advance safety, drive innovation and sustainability."

Auchincloss, who has worked at BP for more than three decades, said the timing was appropriate to transition leadership to someone who could "accelerate delivery of bp's strategy."

The appointment followed a search process conducted by a board committee with assistance from an independent recruitment firm as part of long-term succession planning.
