Akamai Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM) announced it has acquired Fermyon, a serverless WebAssembly company that provides function-as-a-service capabilities.
The acquisition combines Fermyon's cloud-native WebAssembly function-as-a-service technology with Akamai's distributed platform for edge computing applications. Fermyon specializes in serverless functions and WebAssembly technology and maintains open-source projects including Spin and SpinKube under the Cloud Native Computing Foundation.
"Fermyon's FaaS capabilities, combined with Akamai's cloud, will make it even easier for developers to innovate and execute lightweight code at the edge," said Adam Karon, chief operating officer and general manager of Akamai's Cloud Technology Group.
Fermyon's employees, including co-founders Matt Butcher and Radu Matei, will join Akamai's Cloud Technology Group. Akamai stated it will continue supporting Fermyon's open-source project activities and membership in the Bytecode Alliance.
The company plans to integrate Fermyon's edge functions platform with its existing performance and security products. Akamai expects no material impact to its 2025 financial guidance as a result of the transaction.
Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed in the announcement made December 1, 2025.
