Biogen Inc. (NASDAQ: BIIB) announced that Dr. Maria C. Freire will become chair of the board of directors following the company's annual stockholder meeting scheduled for June 9, 2026. Freire will replace Caroline Dorsa, who plans to retire from the board after 16 years of service.

Freire joined Biogen's board in 2021 and currently serves on the Corporate Governance Committee and the Compensation and Management Development Committee. She is founder and principal of The Freire Group, a strategic advisory firm serving life sciences organizations.

Previously, Freire served as president and executive director of the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health, where she led public-private partnerships in medical research. She also served as president and chief executive officer of the Global Alliance for TB Drug Development, advancing compounds through drug development including pretomanid, now approved for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis treatment.

Freire holds additional board positions at Alexandria Real Estate Equities Inc., Exelixis Inc., and Keystone Symposia on Molecular and Cell Biology. She is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and the Council on Foreign Relations.

"With Maria's broad expertise in science and drug development, she is a natural successor to Caroline, bringing important perspective at this pivotal time for Biogen," said Christopher A. Viehbacher, Biogen's president and chief executive officer.

Freire holds a bachelor's degree from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Peru and a doctorate in biophysics from the University of Virginia. The information comes from a company press release.
