Walmart, Avery Dennison develop RFID technology for fresh food departments

October 22, 2025 7:30 AM EDT

Walmart Inc. (NYSE: WMT) and Avery Dennison Corporation (NYSE: AVY) announced the development of radio-frequency identification technology for fresh food categories including meat, bakery and deli departments.

The companies created sensor technology that enables RFID-enabled labels to function in high-moisture, cold environments such as meat cases, addressing a previous industry limitation. The solution allows Walmart associates to track inventory and monitor digital use-by dates, facilitating product rotation and markdown decisions.

"We believe technology should make things easier for both our associates and our customers," said Christyn Keef, VP of Front End Transformation for Walmart U.S. "By cutting down on manual work, we're giving our associates more time to focus on what really matters—helping our customers."

Julie Vargas, VP and GM of Avery Dennison Identification Solutions, said the technology gives each item a digital identity that enables associates to instantly assess food freshness for inventory management purposes.

The collaboration supports Walmart's sustainability goal to reduce global operational food loss and waste intensity by half by 2030. The automated item-level identification system aims to improve fresh food management operations.

Avery Dennison reported $8.8 billion in sales for 2024 and employs approximately 35,000 people across more than 50 countries. Walmart reported fiscal year 2025 revenue of $681 billion and serves approximately 270 million customers weekly across more than 10,750 stores in 19 countries.

The information is based on a press release from the companies.
