Wall Street Journal launches Free Expression newsletter with new columnists

December 15, 2025 10:01 AM EST

The Wall Street Journal announced the launch of Free Expression, a newsletter-focused expansion of its Opinion section that will feature new writers and editors. The initiative represents a significant expansion of the publication's editorial content.

Free Expression will initially be available as a free newsletter and in a dedicated section on WSJ.com for a limited time. The product will then transition to a paid add-on for current subscribers or be bundled with subscriptions for new customers. A limited free version will continue to be available weekly on WSJ.com and Substack.

Paul A. Gigot, the Journal's editorial page editor since 2001, said he is excited to expand Opinion content with new writers and audio and video content to enhance subscriber value.

Matthew Hennessey, Free Expression editor and columnist, will oversee the new offering. He noted that the newsletter will cover topics broader than typically seen in the print pages, though it will not ignore politics and policy.

The publication will add several new columnists for Free Expression at launch, including Matthew Continetti, Meghan Cox Gurdon, James B. Meigs, John J. Miller, Louise Perry, Ben Sasse, and Kyle Smith. These writers will contribute views and reporting on current events and social and political discourse.

The Wall Street Journal Opinion section has operated for more than 130 years, featuring editorial content, op-ed columns, and letters from thought leaders in business, economics, and politics. Free Expression will focus particularly on current political and cultural debates.
