Veeco Instruments Inc. (NASDAQ: VECO) announced the launch of its Lumina+ metal-organic chemical vapor deposition system and received a multi-tool order from Rocket Lab Corporation (NASDAQ: RKLB) for high-volume production of compound semiconductor products.
Rocket Lab purchased the tools as part of its project under the Department of Commerce's CHIPS and Science Act to expand domestic production of compound semiconductor products. The company will use the equipment to double production capacity for space-grade solar cells at its Albuquerque, New Mexico facility.
According to the press release, the Lumina+ system features the largest As/P batch size in the MOCVD industry and targets applications in solar, consumer electronics, automotive, optical communications, and biotechnology sectors.
"The new Lumina+ system is a highly differentiated, game-changing production platform that enables cost-effective scaling for next-generation applications," said Anil Vijayendran, Vice President of the MOCVD Product Line at Veeco.
Rocket Lab has been producing space-grade solar cells and solar panels for over 25 years and has used Veeco platforms for more than 20 years. Brad Clevenger, Vice President of Space Systems at Rocket Lab, stated the collaboration will help the company "meet the increasing demand for satellite solar power and serve as a trusted source of domestically produced semiconductor technologies."
The Lumina+ system combines Veeco's TurboDisc technology with process efficiency features designed for compound semiconductor manufacturing. Veeco manufactures semiconductor process equipment including laser annealing, ion beam, MOCVD, single wafer etch and clean, and lithography technologies.
