United States Steel Corporation and Nippon Steel Corporation (TSE: 5401) announced the appointment of three independent U.S. directors to U.S. Steel's board of directors.

The new board comprises seven directors, four of whom are U.S. citizens, including the three newly appointed independent U.S. directors. This composition aligns with commitments made in a national security agreement, according to the companies' statement.

The three independent U.S. directors are John M. Donovan, former CEO of AT&T Communications; Robert J. Stevens, former chairman, president and CEO of Lockheed Martin Corporation; and Admiral Timothy J. Keating, USN (Ret.), CEO and vice chair of Keating Global, LLC.

Donovan led AT&T Communications from August 2017 until October 2019 and currently serves on boards of Palo Alto Networks and Lockheed Martin. Stevens headed Lockheed Martin from 2005 to 2013 and serves on T. Rowe Price Group's board. Keating commanded the U.S. Pacific Command until December 2009, overseeing operations affecting 3.4 billion people.

The remaining four board members include David B. Burritt, U.S. Steel's president and CEO; Takahiro Mori, Nippon Steel's representative director and vice chairman who serves as U.S. Steel board chairman; Naoki Sato, Nippon Steel's representative director and executive vice president; and Hiroshi Ono, managing executive officer at Nippon Steel and president of Nippon Steel North America.

"We are delighted to bring together a group of world-class individuals who share a common interest in solidifying U.S. Steel's position as the leading steelmaker in the United States," Mori said in the statement.
