The PJM Board of Directors approved a proposed 220-mile, 765-kV transmission line project by NextEra Energy Transmission, LLC, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy, Inc. (NYSE: NEE), and Exelon Corporation (NASDAQ: EXC), according to a company statement.
The transmission line will serve West Virginia, Pennsylvania and the broader Mid-Atlantic region. PJM operates as the regional grid operator for 13 states and the District of Columbia.
The project aims to add capacity to meet rising electricity demand and enable new generation to connect to the grid. The companies stated the line will provide electricity supply for residential and business customers while supporting industrial investment.
"This transmission line enables long-term safe, reliable and affordable power for the region—this is a win for residents and a win for the local economy," said Matt Valle, president of NextEra Energy Transmission.
Carim Khouzami, executive vice president of transmission and development for Exelon, said the investment addresses electricity demand increases that are outpacing current supply. "This result will allow us to deliver meaningful, lasting value for the region," Khouzami stated.
The companies plan to hold community open houses later this year as part of their engagement process. NextEra Energy Transmission operates more than 3,100 miles of transmission lines across 18 states and Canada.
Exelon serves approximately 11 million customers through six regulated transmission and distribution utilities and employs more than 20,000 people.
