Nextracker launches AI and robotics unit with $40 million in acquisitions

July 29, 2025 4:06 PM EDT

Nextracker (NASDAQ: NXT) announced the creation of a new AI and robotics business division, supported by over $40 million in technology acquisitions over the past four quarters, according to a company press release.

The solar technology platform provider appointed Dr. Francesco Borrelli as its first chief AI and robotics officer. Borrelli brings experience in predictive control systems and autonomous technologies across robotics, automotive, and industrial sectors.

The company acquired three AI and robotics technologies as part of the initiative. Nextracker purchased OnSight Technology, which develops autonomous robotic inspection and fire detection systems for solar power plants. OnSight's AI-driven tools are designed to identify and forecast mechanical and electrical failures for predictive maintenance.

Nextracker also disclosed two additional acquisitions: SenseHawk IP in August 2024, which provides technology for creating high-resolution 3D maps of solar project sites using AI-enabled drone imagery, and Amir Robotics in March 2025, developer of water-free robotic cleaning technology for large-scale solar installations.

"With millions of sensors and control nodes already deployed over approximately 100 GW of operating systems in 40 countries, Nextracker has a unique opportunity to harness AI and robotics at scale," said Dan Shugar, founder and CEO of Nextracker.

OnSight products are commercially available in the United States, with global rollout planned for next year. The Amir Robotics cleaning technology is currently being tested at several commercial sites.

Nextracker operates solar tracking systems that follow the sun's movement to optimize energy output across more than 40 countries worldwide.
