NTSB investigates Waymo vehicle crash with pedestrian in Santa Monica

The National Transportation Safety Board is conducting a safety investigation into a Jan. 23 crash between a Waymo autonomous vehicle and a pedestrian in Santa Monica, California, according to a statement from the agency.

The NTSB is coordinating with the Santa Monica Police Department on the investigation. The agency did not provide additional details about the circumstances of the crash or the condition of the pedestrian involved.

Waymo, owned by Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL), operates autonomous vehicle services in several cities across the United States. The company has not immediately responded to requests for comment regarding the incident.

The investigation represents the federal safety agency's examination of the crash involving the self-driving vehicle technology. The NTSB typically investigates transportation accidents to determine probable causes and issue safety recommendations.
