GreenPower Motor Company Inc. (NASDAQ: GP) signed a contract worth more than $5 million with New Mexico to supply electric school buses for a two-year pilot program, the company announced.
The pilot will deploy three GreenPower Type A Nano BEAST Access electric school buses during the 2025-26 school year and three Type D BEAST and Mega BEAST electric school buses in 2026-27. The buses will rotate among participating school districts in five six-week rounds each school year.
GreenPower will install charging systems and provide driver and mechanic training as part of the contract. The company stated that manufacturing of the three Nano BEAST Access buses is substantially complete, with deployment scheduled for September 15.
The pilot will evaluate both Level 3 DC fast chargers and Level 2 slow chargers for the smaller buses, with Level 3 DC fast charging testing planned for the larger BEAST buses in the second year. The program will also include a vehicle-to-grid evaluation using the Mega BEAST, which has a 387 kWh battery pack and up to 300 miles of range.
"The New Mexico pilot project provides an opportunity to expand the reach of GreenPower's zero-emission school bus product," said GreenPower President Brendan Riley.
Mark Roper, Director of the Economic Development Division within the New Mexico Economic Development Department, said the state is particularly interested in evaluating charging infrastructure. "Range, charging rates and grid resiliency are critical components of switching to all-electric, zero-emission vehicles," Roper stated.
GreenPower is partnering with Highland Electric Fleets to install the charging infrastructure for the pilot program.
