Google upgrades NotebookLM with enhanced AI capabilities and new formats
Google announced upgrades to its NotebookLM research tool, introducing new AI-powered features and expanded output formats. The updates include integration with Gemini 3.5 and Antigravity systems, along with agentic capabilities designed to handle complex research projects.
The enhanced version now operates with a secure cloud computer that can write and execute code, incorporating more than 100 software skills for document analysis and research tasks. According to Google's internal evaluations, the upgraded system achieved a 65% win rate compared to the previous version across five core evaluation dimensions.
NotebookLM now supports additional output formats including PDF reports with charts and tables, spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and data visualizations. Users can create documents in formats such as PNG, SVG, DOCX, CSV, JSON, and XLSX files directly within the platform.
The tool has expanded its research capabilities to help users build source repositories through chat interactions. The system can conduct web searches using Google Search to identify and add relevant sources to notebooks while maintaining user control over source selection.
Google provided examples of potential use cases, including data analysts combining information from multiple countries, program managers creating simplified technical guides, and small business owners analyzing sales data against advertising spending.
The updates are available to users with Google AI Ultra subscriptions and Workspace business customers with AI Ultra Access and AI Expanded Access. Google plans to expand availability to additional users over time.
NotebookLM launched three years ago as an experimental product from Google Labs and has been used by millions of people and organizations for research and knowledge management tasks.
