Google launches Lyria 3 music generation in Gemini app

February 18, 2026 11:02 AM EST

Google has introduced Lyria 3, a music generation model, to its Gemini app in beta. The feature allows users to create 30-second tracks using text prompts or uploaded images.

According to a company statement, users can describe musical ideas or upload photos to generate tracks with automatically created lyrics. The system can produce both vocal and instrumental compositions across various genres and styles.

Lyria 3 offers three main capabilities compared to previous versions: automatic lyric generation based on prompts, enhanced creative control over musical elements including style and tempo, and the ability to create more complex musical compositions.

The feature supports two primary methods of music creation. Users can input text descriptions specifying genre, mood, or themes to generate corresponding tracks. Alternatively, they can upload photos or videos, which the system analyzes to create matching musical content.

Each generated track includes custom cover art created by Nano Banana, Google's image generation system. Users can download tracks or share them through provided links.

The technology incorporates SynthID, Google's watermarking system for AI-generated content. The Gemini app has expanded its verification capabilities to detect AI-generated audio content alongside existing image and video detection.

Lyria 3 is also being integrated into YouTube's Dream Track feature for content creators. The system is designed to avoid mimicking specific artists, instead using artist names as general creative inspiration.

The feature is available to users aged 18 and older in eight languages: English, German, Spanish, French, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, and Portuguese. Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers receive higher usage limits.

The rollout begins on desktop platforms today and will expand to mobile applications over the following days.
