Genentech launches direct-to-patient program for flu drug Xofluza
Genentech, a member of the Roche Group (SIX: RO, ROG; OTCQX: RHHBY), launched its first direct-to-patient program for Xofluza, offering the flu medication at $50 for cash-paying customers through select pharmacies.
The program provides the single-dose oral antiviral at 70 percent below the list price for eligible patients who are uninsured, underinsured, or self-pay. Genentech partnered with Alto Pharmacy Powered by Fuze Health, Amazon Pharmacy, and Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company to distribute the medication.
Same-day home delivery is available in select markets through Alto Pharmacy and Amazon Pharmacy, while all three pharmacies offer nationwide mail delivery for prophylaxis treatment. The $50 cash option is available through Alto Pharmacy and Cost Plus Drugs.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the 2024-25 flu season was the most severe since 2017-18, with an estimated 47-82 million illnesses, 21-37 million medical visits, 610,000-1,300,000 hospitalizations, and 27,000-130,000 deaths.
Xofluza is approved for treating flu in patients five years and older who have been symptomatic for no more than 48 hours, and for preventing flu following exposure. The medication works by inhibiting the cap-dependent endonuclease protein to block viral replication.
Genentech also enhanced its existing Xofluza coupon program, allowing eligible patients to pay as little as $35 with up to $70 off at participating pharmacies. The company stated the initiative supports making medicines more affordable for American patients.
The drug was discovered by Shionogi & Co., Ltd. and is developed and commercialized through a collaboration with the Roche Group globally, excluding Japan and Taiwan where Shionogi retains exclusive rights.
