Energy Vault, PG&E complete hybrid battery-hydrogen microgrid in California

September 25, 2025 2:00 PM EDT

Energy Vault Holdings Inc. (NYSE: NRGV) and Pacific Gas and Electric Company (NYSE: PCG) announced the completion of the Calistoga Resiliency Center, a 293 megawatt hour microgrid system that combines hydrogen fuel cells with lithium-ion batteries in Calistoga, California.

The facility serves approximately 1,600 PG&E customers and provides at least 48 hours of continuous power during Public Safety Power Shutoffs with peak output of 8.5 megawatts. The system uses hydrogen fuel cells for electricity generation during island mode operation, working with Energy Vault's B-VAULT battery technology to maintain grid stability.

Energy Vault closed $28 million in financing for the project, including the sale of associated Investment Tax Credits. The company owns and operates the facility under a long-term energy services agreement with PG&E as the utility partner and distribution system operator.

"This project is a major milestone in our mission to deliver sustainable, resilient energy solutions to communities most vulnerable to climate-driven grid disruptions," said Craig Horne, Senior Vice President, Advanced Energy Solutions at Energy Vault.

The project represents Energy Vault's "Own & Operate" strategy aimed at generating recurring revenue. The company previously completed the Cross Trails BESS as its first project under this business model.

PG&E has deployed 13 distribution microgrids since 2021 to support communities during power shutoffs, with Calistoga being the largest and first fully renewable system. The utility committed $43 million in March 2025 to fund nine new community microgrids in the North Coast region.

"The Calistoga Resiliency Center is another step toward fulfilling that commitment," said Mike Delaney, Vice President, Utility Partnerships and Innovation at PG&E.
