Dermata Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ: DRMA) announced the Australian Patent Office has accepted the company's patent application for its Spongilla technology combination as a method for treating acne. The patent application, titled "Compositions and methods for the treatment of skin conditions," will be automatically issued in mid-January 2026 unless a third party files opposition within three months of publication.
The acceptance follows Dermata's previously issued U.S. patent covering the same Spongilla technology combination. The company expects to launch a once-weekly, over-the-counter acne kit incorporating this technology in mid-2026.
"This acceptance from the Australian patent office comes at a great time for our company as we embark on our new mission to provide patients with OTC pharmaceutical products that are backed by science," said Gerry Proehl, Dermata's Chairman, President, and CEO.
According to the company, over 3.3 million people are diagnosed with acne in Australia and over 30 million in the United States. The company states that approximately 85% of teenagers experience some form of acne.
Dermata has additional patent filings pending in other jurisdictions. The San Diego-based company recently announced a strategic shift to focus on developing and distributing over-the-counter pharmaceutical skin treatments, moving away from its previous approach.
The information is based on a company press release statement.
