Can-Fite BioPharma Ltd. (NYSE American: CANF) announced the publication of a peer-reviewed scientific article detailing positive findings from a study of its drug Piclidenoson for treating canine osteoarthritis. The article appeared in the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science.
The study showed that oral treatment with Piclidenoson resulted in statistically significant improvement in mobility and pain assessments in dogs with osteoarthritis. Key findings included significant improvement in Liverpool Osteoarthritis in Dogs scores for dogs treated with Piclidenoson at 500 µg/kg twice daily, significant reduction in pain scores measured by Visual Analog Scale, and significant reduction in veterinarian-assessed lameness and pain.
The study reported no serious treatment-related adverse events. Piclidenoson is being developed for veterinary use by Vetbiolix under a licensing agreement with Can-Fite valued at up to $325 million in upfront, milestone, and royalty payments.
Vetbiolix is conducting an advanced Phase 2 clinical study evaluating Piclidenoson in dogs with osteoarthritis. Prof. Pnina Fishman, Can-Fite's Chairperson and Chief Scientific Officer, said the publication represents external validation of Piclidenoson's therapeutic potential in canine osteoarthritis.
Piclidenoson is described as a novel A3 adenosine receptor agonist small molecule drug that demonstrated safety and efficacy in a Phase III clinical study in psoriasis. The drug works by inhibiting inflammatory cytokines interleukin 17 and 23 and inducing apoptosis of skin cell keratinocytes involved in disease pathogenicity.
Can-Fite is an advanced clinical stage biotechnology company developing treatments for cancer, liver, and inflammatory diseases. The company trades on NYSE American and Tel Aviv Stock Exchange under the ticker CANF.
