Bristol Myers Squibb partners with Microsoft on AI lung cancer detection

Bristol Myers Squibb (NYSE: BMY) announced a collaboration with Microsoft to deploy AI algorithms for early lung cancer detection through Microsoft's Precision Imaging Network.

The partnership will integrate U.S. FDA-cleared radiology AI algorithms into Microsoft's healthcare radiology solutions, which are used by more than 80% of U.S. hospitals. The AI technology analyzes X-ray and CT images to identify lung disease and detect lung nodules that may indicate early-stage lung cancer.

Lung cancer causes approximately 125,000 deaths annually in the United States, with 227,000 new cases reported each year. The collaboration aims to address disparities in care, as medically underserved populations experience higher lung cancer mortality rates and are less likely to receive guideline-concordant screening.

"By combining Microsoft's highly scalable radiology solutions with BMS' deep expertise in oncology and drug delivery, we've envisioned a unique AI-enabled workflow that helps clinicians quickly and accurately identify patients with Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer and guide them to optimal care pathways and precision therapies," said Dr. Alexandra Goncalves, VP and Head of Digital Health at Bristol Myers Squibb.

The initiative will focus on expanding access to early detection in medically underserved communities, including rural hospitals and community clinics. The collaboration includes workflow management tools to track patients with lung nodules through care pathways, addressing the issue that more than half of patients with incidental findings are lost to follow-up.

Peter Durlach, Corporate Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer at Microsoft Health and Life Sciences, stated that the technology platform can help clinicians identify patients showing early signs of cancer before they are aware of symptoms.

The information is based on a press release statement from Bristol Myers Squibb.
