Bernstein says Donald Trump wants this stock to go up

Investing.com -- Donald Trump has made no secret of his desire to see the stock of one company rise, analysts at Bernstein said in a note Monday.

The firm wrote that “the President literally tweeted/truthed out pictures of himself watching the stock [Intel] price go up, so we suppose that is a bull case of sorts.”

In its latest semiconductor sector report, Bernstein addressed the unusual role of government influence in markets.

The analysts wrote, “on top of all the typical concerns investors have in semiconductors we can now add governmental intervention to the list, both indirect (for example tariff policy, export controls) as well as increasingly direct measures like full-on equity stakes.”

Despite the presidential spotlight, Bernstein remains sceptical about Intel’s long-term prospects.

“We continue to believe Intel is fundamentally challenged, and recent partner investments don’t really change the story,” the note said.

The firm added that the company’s problems stem from execution rather than capital.

“Far more than money they need customers, and hence capability, and their lack thereof has nothing to do with money.”

Bernstein conceded that Intel “is likely to be viewed as a tariff winner,” but warned that the company’s current lack of external customers undermines this argument.

Overall, analysts see little near-term upside: “the turnaround is going to be a slog; we wouldn’t short it, but have trouble with that long case.” Intel is rated Market-Perform at Bernstein.

The wider sector has shown mixed signals, with AI driving “off the charts” demand for Nvidia, while analog recovery plays have stalled.

Yet the analysts cautioned that “valuations have started to climb markedly again,” leaving investors to weigh political intervention alongside fundamentals.
