Anthropic expands Google Cloud TPU usage to over one million chips

October 23, 2025 4:31 PM EDT

Anthropic announced it will significantly expand its use of Google Cloud's TPU chips, gaining access to up to one million TPU chips and over a gigawatt of computing capacity coming online in 2026.

The expansion represents the largest increase in Anthropic's TPU usage to date, according to a company statement. The additional computing resources will support training and serving future generations of Anthropic's Claude AI models.

Anthropic selected TPUs based on their price-performance and efficiency characteristics, as well as the company's existing experience using the chips for model training and deployment, the statement said.

The companies initially established a strategic partnership in 2023, with Anthropic using Google Cloud's infrastructure to train its models and making them available through Google Cloud's Vertex AI platform and Cloud Marketplace. The partnership currently serves thousands of businesses using Claude models on Google Cloud, including Figma, Palo Alto Networks, and Cursor.

"Our customers—from Fortune 500 companies to AI-native startups—depend on Claude for their most important work, and this expanded capacity ensures we can meet our exponentially growing demand," said Krishna Rao, CFO of Anthropic.

Thomas Kurian, CEO at Google Cloud, said the expansion reflects the performance Anthropic's teams have experienced with TPUs. Google Cloud continues developing its AI accelerator portfolio, including its seventh generation TPU called Ironwood.

The expanded agreement provides Anthropic with additional Google Cloud services beyond the TPU chips themselves, supporting the company's research and development operations.
