Americold Realty Trust (NYSE: COLD) opened a $100 million import-export facility in Kansas City, Missouri, developed in partnership with Canadian Pacific Kansas City (TSX: CP) (NYSE: CP).
The 335,000-square-foot facility represents Americold's first location on the CPKC rail network and serves as a hub for the Mexico Midwest Express, described as North America's only single-line rail service for refrigerated goods between the U.S. and Mexico.
The facility includes on-site USDA inspection capabilities and can handle containers exceeding 50,000 pounds. It provides service within a 300-mile radius and functions as a consolidation point for shipments between Canada and Mexico.
"By combining our cold storage capabilities and food flow expertise with CPKC's rail network, we're creating a new North American cold chain that delivers real value to our customers," said George Chappelle, CEO of Americold.
Keith Creel, President and CEO of CPKC, stated the facility represents "the first of many across our unrivaled North American network" and combines refrigerated storage with cross-border rail service.
The project is expected to create nearly 190 jobs in the Kansas City area. The facility is part of Americold's broader strategy to develop import-export hubs through strategic partnerships to support North American trade lanes.
The project received support from Missouri Partnership, the City of Kansas City, Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City, and other local organizations.
Americold operates more than 230 temperature-controlled facilities across North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and South America, totaling approximately 1.4 billion refrigerated cubic feet. CPKC operates approximately 20,000 route miles of rail network connecting Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
