Ameresco Inc. (NYSE: AMRC) announced that a renewable natural gas facility at the Lee County Landfill in Dixon, Illinois, has begun commercial operation. The facility, developed in partnership with Republic Services Inc. (NYSE: RSG), began injecting renewable natural gas into a transmission pipeline in June.
The 11.7-megawatt facility processes 4,500 standard cubic feet per minute of landfill gas annually into nearly 1.2 million dekatherms of renewable energy. Ameresco wholly owns the facility, which represents the 15th renewable energy project completed through the partnership between the two companies.
The facility captures naturally occurring landfill gas and converts it into pipeline-quality renewable natural gas. According to the companies, the facility will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 61,000 metric tons per year, equivalent to eliminating emissions from over 70 million gallons of gasoline consumption.
U.S. Energy serves as the exclusive buyer of the pipeline-quality renewable natural gas from the Lee County facility. The project converts previously flared gas into a renewable energy resource that can be used as a transportation fuel.
The facility aligns with Illinois' renewable energy targets of 40% renewable energy by 2030 and 100% clean energy by 2050. Republic Services has committed to beneficially reuse over 50% of the biogas at all its locations by 2030.
Ameresco, founded in 2000 and headquartered in Framingham, Massachusetts, provides energy solutions including efficiency upgrades and distributed energy resource development. The company has more than 1,500 employees across North America and Europe.
