Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White said Wednesday Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) may be planning the launch of a Smart TV by the end of 2011.
White said he picked up on data points at a trade show in China this week which suggested Apple could be entering the $100 billion LCD TV market.
"Our research suggests this Smart TV would go well beyond the miniature $99 second-generation Apple TV that the company released last fall and provide a full-blown TV product for consumers," White said. "The combination of Apple's powerful ecosystem, industrial design savvy, powerful brand and ability to reinvent product categories could make Apple a powerful force in the TV world over the next few years."
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has long been saying Apple would enter the television market, offering an array of models starting at $2,000 and up to 50 inches in screen size. The $3.9 billion investment earlier this year by Apple to securing key components is just more evidence according to Munster.
Shares of Apple are up about 0.5 percent to $33.90 Wednesday.
